The Lengthening of Shadows

the lengthening of shadows

the lengthening of shadows

Summer’s slipping away yet for some it has not started
The sun sliding yellow light across a sand bevelled after stormy rains
Rolling down the ramp into the retreating day
My brain a sleepy stillness the pond echoes

the sun slipping away

the sun slipping away

The water cooling too fast
The months rolling too fast
The routine of my days
Too fast

I wade slow motion steps like a toddler into water
Interrupting smooth jade sheen as little as I might
A swan, a duck in flight
Diving into crisp clean green
Cooling the day I lay to rest

slow motion steps of a toddler

slow motion steps of a toddler

cooling of the day

cooling of the day
